majo diabetes-complications

Diabetes can strike anyone, from any walk of life. And it does – in numbers that are dramatically increasing. In the last decade, the cases of people living with diabetes jumped almost 50 percent – to almost 350million people worldwide.

Worldwide, it afflicts more than 350 million people currently.  And the World Health Organization estimates that by 2030, number of people living with diabetes will more than double. Today, diabetes takes more lives than AIDS and breast cancer combined. It is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart failure and stroke. Living with diabetes places an enormous emotional, physical and financial burden on the entire family.

Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. This is because your pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin, or not enough insulin, to help glucose enter your body’s cells – or the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). insulin vs glucose Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter the body’s cells, where it is used as fuel for energy so we can work, play and generally live our lives. It is vital for life. Glucose comes from digesting carbohydrate and is also produced by the liver. If you have diabetes, your body cannot make proper use of this glucose, so, it builds up in the blood and can’t be used as fuel. pijl

When you’re trying to get pregnant, some of your habits may need to change. Here are ten fertility foes to steer clear of when you’re actively trying to have a baby. - See more at:

  1. About 347 Million People Worldwide Have Diabetes – There is an emerging global epidemic of diabetes that can be traced back to rapid increases in overweight, including obesity and physical inactivity.
  1. Diabetes Is Predicted To Become The 7th Leading Cause Of Death In The World By The Year 2030 – Total deaths from diabetes are projected to rise by more than 50% in the next 10 years.
  1. There Are Two Major Forms Of Diabetes – Type 1 diabetes is characterised by a lack of insulin production and type 2 diabetes results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin.
  1. A Third Type Of Diabetes Is Gestational Diabetes – This type is characterised by hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, with values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes, occurring during pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. They are also at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the future.
  1. Type 2 Diabetes Is Much More Common Than Type 1 Diabetes – Type 2 accounts for around 90% of all diabetes worldwide. Reports of type 2 diabetes in children – previously rare – have increased worldwide. In some countries, it accounts for almost half of newly diagnosed cases in children and adolescents.

There are a number of different types of diabetes, some of which are more prevalent than others. The most common types are;

  1. Type 1 Diabetes
  2. Type 2 Diabetes and
  3. Gestational Diabetes

The most common form of diabetes in the general population is type2 diabetes, which often develops from pre-diabetes. Type1 diabetes is more common in children and gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and kills the beta cells of the pancreas. No, or very little, insulin is released into the body. As a result, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used as energy. About five to 10 per cent of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes generally develops in childhood or adolescence, but can also develop in adulthood too. Type 1 diabetes is always treated with insulin and meal planning also helps with keeping blood sugar at the right levels. Type 1 diabetes also includes latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), the term used to describe the small number of people with apparent type 2 diabetes who appear to have immune-mediated loss of pancreatic beta cells.

Conditions Linked With Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body’s immune system mistakes its own cells for invading pathogens that need to be destroyed. People with type 1 diabetes tend to have a higher risk of having other autoimmune diseases than the rest of the population and those other autoimmune diseases include:

  • Coeliac disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Addisons disease
  • Autoimmune thyroid disease

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can’t properly use the insulin that is released (called insulin insensitivity) or does not make enough insulin. As a result, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used as energy. About 90 per cent of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes more often develops in adults, but children can be affected too. Depending on the severity of type 2 diabetes, it may be managed through physical activity and meal planning, or may also require medications and/or insulin to control blood sugar more effectively.

Conditions Linked With Type 2 Diabetes

There are a number of conditions that are not necessarily a direct cause but are closely linked with type 2 diabetes. Conditions closely linked with type 2 diabetes include: Alzheimer’s Disease – as noted above, this has been referred to as type 3 diabetes by some researchers Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – a condition that can impact on fertility in women Cushing’s Syndrome – a condition characterised by excess production of the hormone cortisol Pancreatic Cancer – has been linked with type 2 diabetes with some debate as to which condition may influence the other

A third type of diabetes, gestational diabetes, is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. It affects approximately two to four per cent of all pregnancies (in the non-Aboriginal population) and involves an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child.

complications of diabetes

Long-term complications of diabetes develop gradually. The longer you have diabetes — and the less controlled your blood sugar — the higher the risk of complications. Eventually, diabetes complications may be disabling or even life-threatening. Diabetes increases your risk for many serious health problems. The good news? With the correct treatment and recommended lifestyle changes, many people with diabetes are able to prevent or delay the onset of complications. Some even get the condition reversed entirely. People with diabetes have an increased risk of developing a number of serious health problems. Consistently high blood glucose levels can lead to serious diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves and teeth. In addition, people with diabetes also have a higher risk of developing infections. In almost all high-income countries, diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower limb amputation. Maintaining blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol at or close to normal can help delay or prevent diabetes complications. Therefore people with diabetes need regular monitoring. Possible complications include;

  • Cardiovascular Disease cardiovascular disease due to diabetesDiabetes dramatically increases the risk of various cardiovascular problems, including coronary artery disease with chest pain (angina), heart attack, stroke and narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis). If you have diabetes, you are more likely to have heart disease or stroke.
  • Nerve Damage (Neuropathy) – Excess sugar can injure the walls of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) that nourish your nerves, especially in your legs. This can cause tingling, numbness, burning or pain that usually begins at the tips of the toes or fingers and gradually spreads upward. Left untreated, you could lose all sense of feeling in the affected limbs. Damage to the nerves related to digestion can cause problems with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. For men, it may lead to erectile dysfunction.
  • Kidney Damage (Nephropathy)  The kidneys contain millions of tiny blood vessel clusters Kidney Damage due to diabetes(glomeruli) that filter waste from your blood. Diabetes can damage this delicate filtering system. Severe damage can lead to kidney failure or irreversible end-stage kidney disease, which may require dialysis or a kidney transplant.
  • Eye Damage (Retinopathy) – Diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the retina (diabetic retinopathy), potentially leading to blindness. Diabetes also increases the risk of other serious vision conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma.
  • Foot Damage foot damage due to diabetesNerve damage in the feet or poor blood flow to the feet increases the risk of various foot complications. Left untreated, cuts and blisters can develop serious infections, which often heal poorly. These infections may ultimately require toe, foot or leg amputation.
  • Skin Conditions – Diabetes may leave you more susceptible to skin problems, including bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Hearing Impairment – Hearing problems are more common in people with diabetes.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease – Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The poorer your blood sugar control, the greater the risk appears to be. Although, there are theories as to how these disorders might be connected, none has yet been proved.
  • Pregnancy Complications – Women with any type of diabetes during pregnancy risk a number of complications if they do not carefully monitor and manage their condition. To prevent possible organ damage to the foetus, women with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes should achieve target glucose levels before conception. All women with diabetes during pregnancy, type 1, type 2 or gestational should strive for normal blood glucose levels throughout to minimize complications. High blood glucose during pregnancy can lead to the foetus putting on excess weight. This can lead to problems in delivery, trauma to the child and mother, and a sudden drop in blood glucose for the child after birth. Children who are exposed for a long time to high blood glucose in the womb are at higher risk of developing diabetes in the future.

    • Hello Festus,

The truth is that you are not the only one that is confused about his type of diabetes, a lot of other people are too. But with accurate diagnosis, it is easy to know the type of diabetes you have. The easiest way to do it is by considering the time in your life (age) you are diagnosed of it, your symptoms, your weight, do you have other issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, do you have days of hypoglycaemia and so on. If you are able to get accurate answers to these, it might help you know the type of diabetes you have.

I hope this helps a little.

  6. Hello Festus,

The values you get from our package is far beyond the quoted price. Just think of several other treatment options you might have spent small small money on without any result to show for it. This offers you an opportunity to bid Diabetes – especially type 2 diabetes – a final goodbye and enjoy your life. Think about this.

  7. Hello,

We are sincerely grateful for your comment. However, research shows that an average diabetic patient spends over N300,000 annually on various diabetes management drugs and they do this for several years. What we offer is a lasting solution to diabetes that has helped a lot of people. If you compare the two scenarios, every affected person has a choice to make.

The quality of the treatment we offer plus the materials you get to educate and guide yourself for sustainable healthy condition for yourself is priceless.
