How much do you know about Your Sperm?

How much do you know about Your Sperm?

Sperm may be tiny but are responsible for reproduction and its production can result to millions of cells in a day, however, it takes only one to fertilize an egg.

Well, its cells are actually really tiny and are some of the smallest cells in the human body, and measure just 0.005cm.

This is a big contrast in size to the female egg cell that funnily enough is one of the biggest cells in the human body, and is just about visible with the naked eye… well they do say opposites attract!

Dear dad-to-be, firstly, this write up will give more information about the small but yet mighty sperm cell and secondly, treatment of it’s disorders.

What is a Sperm?

Sperm, in another word Spermatozoon, plural Spermatozoa is the male reproductive cell in anisogamous forms of sexual reproduction.

The cell is produced in the male sex organs therefore fertilizes a female egg.

The Structure

The head contains the DNA therefore, when combined with the egg’s DNA will create a new individual.

The tip of the sperm head is the portion called acrosome and it enables the sperm to penetrate the egg.

The midpiece contains the mitochondria which supplies the energy the tail needs to move. The tail moves with whip-like movements back and forth to propel the it towards the egg.

It has to reach the uterus and fallopian tube to fertilize a woman’s egg.

The testicles are the male reproductive organs responsible for making sperm. They also produce testosterone, in other word, a sex hormone responsible for many male characteristics.

Spermatogenesis is the process of creating the cells. This process begins in the seminiferous tubules within the testicles. These tubules produces the cells called spermatocytes.

A man produces over 1,000 sperm every second. On average, a male produces approximately 73 million cells per milliliter of ejaculate.

This egg cell is much more fragile, and after it’s been released from the ovaries, it only lives for a maximum of 24 hours. That is to say, if you’re trying for a baby, the best time to have sex with your sex mate is one or two days before ovulation to allow for the it to swim towards the egg before it’s released.

What does Sperm Motility means?

Structure of a Sperm

Sperm motility refers to the movement and swimming of the cell. They are motile cells, that is to say, they are cells that move themselves, which is important when it comes to getting pregnant.

This cell is programmed to swim in order to reach the ovulated egg.

Motility is crucial for fertilizing an egg. The egg does not contain cells that allow it to move, therefore, it is up to the sperm to propel themselves forward towards the egg.

Research has found that it takes sperm between 2 and 10 minutes after ejaculation to reach the fallopian tube. In a man with normal fertility, one ejaculate of semen may contain over 39 million. All the cell are not expected to be completely healthy.

Poor motility means that the sperm do not swim properly and can lead to male infertility. In other word, Poor motility is called Asthenozoospermia.

A total motile sperm count over 20 million is normal, but, lower than 5 million is poor motility. However, less than 1 million is severe poor motility.

Factors that may affect Sperm Motility include:

  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Prolonged exposure to heat, such as saunas or hot tubs
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Taking artificial steroids, including workout supplements
  • Use of illegal drugs
  • Heart disease or heart problems

What is Sperm Count?

what is sperm count

Sperm count is a measure of the number of spermatozoa per ejaculation or per measured amount or semen, used as an indication of a man’s fertility.

A normal sperm count ranges from 15 million to more than 200 million per milliliter (mL) of semen.

A low sperm count, Oligospermia is less than 15 million per milliliter or 39 million sperm per ejaculate.

A high, or above average, sperm count is over 200 million per millimeter.

This count is determined through a Semen Analysis which may be done at your doctor’s office, a fertility clinic, or with an at-home test.

 How does Sperm Count Matter?

how does sperm count matter

Sperm count can affect fertility because your chance of getting your partner pregnant decreases with a low sperm count. Problems with the quality of the sperm can also affect your chances of getting a woman pregnant.

Male infertility is any health issue in a man that lowers the chances of his female partner getting pregnant. Male fertility depends on your body making normal sperm and delivering them.

Causes of Low Sperm Count

CAUSES OF LOW SPERM COUNT

There are many causes for infertility in men and women. In over a third of infertility cases, the problem is with the man. This is most often due to problems with his sperm production or with sperm delivery.

Sometimes a man’s body makes antibodies that attack his own sperm. Antibodies are as a result of injury, surgery or infection. They keep it from moving and working normally. This is not a common cause of male infertility.

But couples may also experience other health issues that can affect fertility. In some cases, infertility may be due to female factors, like:

Lack of conception may also be the result of not trying to conceive for long enough. In many cases, it can take six months to a year to get pregnant when there are no fertility concerns.

If you are over 35, and you and your partner have been trying to conceive for six months, your doctor may refer you to a fertility specialist.

If you have been trying to conceive for over one year, and you and your partner are under 35, see your doctor for a referral.

Treatment of Sperm Count

Treatment of Low Sperm Count

Treatment depends on causes of infertility and it does not always need a surgery.

Medications

Certain medications can change its production, function and delivery. Some supplements may also help improve its motility.

Speak to your doctor before taking supplements, and be careful about where you buy them. Supplements are to be purchased by reputable vendors.

As a natural health research company, we are sure that Oligospermia Remedy Kit (for low sperm count) and the Azoospermia Remedy Kit (for zero sperm count) can be of help to you.

  • Lifestyle Changes

Some lifestyle changes or modification may help increase its motility for some men:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Limit cell phone exposure
  • Reduce alcohol
  • Quit smoking
  • Reduce Stress

In summary, two key factors that can affect male fertility are sperm count and sperm motility. Those experiencing fertility issues may benefit from a semen analysis. This test will help to identify any potential issues.

Also, keeping a healthy weight, staying physically active, and eating a well-balanced diet is good for a man’s fertility.
